Serendipity: An Experimental Print-making Workshop

Lasanaa has been coordinating, organizing and conducting various local, national and international workshops in Nepal. Among various ongoing projects, Serendipity: an Experimental Printmaking Workshop (1-7 Oct, 2010) was jointly organized with Srijana Art College, TU Kathmandu. We engaged in a week-long printmaking workshop led by Fulbright scholar, Kathryn Hagy, who is an Associate Professor of Art at Mount Mercy University, USA.

The main objectives of the workshop were to encourage artists to do experimental work in printmaking, to build up conceptual work in their art practices and to unite artists from different genres and art educational backgrounds, and encourage them to explore, exchange, experiment and collaborate.  Because the predominant printmaking technique taught in Nepali higher education focuses on intaglio (mainly etching-based work), we expanded student’s technical vocabulary by introducing them to alternative monotypes, pochoir stencil printing, drypoint on non-metallic surfaces, non-etched aquatint, and safer shop practices and materials such as cooking or baby oil for clean-up instead of kerosene.
