The Importance of Critical Thinking & Analysis for Efficacy in Creativity

Workshop Synopsis: This workshop will examine the importance of critical thinking and analysis for efficacy in creative communication, with particular focus on the visual and media arts.While the individuality of self expressive vocabularies has long been emphasized as a core aspects of authentic creative endeavor, importance of critical distance and analysis in the creative process — especially those endeavors for which “communication” is a primary concern — demands equal recognition as the “midwife” of artistic output with genuine “staying power’’. This workshop propose to examine how developing artists habits of creative analysis aids the artist in bringing the microcosm of “self” and the macrocosm of “collective” into alignment, resulting in the creation of works with increased potential for lasting effect.

Germanwatch poster contest on “Climate Justice”; Deadline 15 February 2012

Poster Contest: Climate Justice

Germanwatch calls for a poster contest presenting prizes for the most origi-nal, artistically high qualitative and meaningful poster on climate justice. The three winners will be awarded a total prize money of 1800€. Closing date is the 15 February 2012.

The poster contest shall call the attention of a wider public to the subject of climate justice in the context of international cooperation. A special emphasis will be put on opportunities of action.

Possible contents could be the following topics:
-    Adaptation to the impacts of climate change in developing countries;
-    Climate protection as a contribution to global justice;
-    People responsible and people affected by climate change;
-    Climate protection as a future opportunity for developing countries;
-    International climate financing;
-    International coalitions for an ambitious climate policy.
-    Three Pillars of Climate Justice (right to survival, effort/burden sharing, opportunity sharing)

Participants:
The announcement is directed primarily at students and young professionals in performing arts. But anyone who is interested in climate and development policy can participate.

Implementation:
There are no regulations about the methodological implementation, however, the proposals should refer explicitly to climate change in the development context. As part of the poster, it is recommended to add not only a slogan, but also a brief text in German or English explaining the topic. The target format is A2 to A1.

Use of the designs:
The objective is to use the three winner posters for the education and information work of Germanwatch, for example in the run-up to the Rio +20 Summit,
The printing and distribution of at least 500 copies is planned. Submissions can be made in German or English.

Prize money:    1st place: 1.000,- € | 2nd place: 500,- € | 3rd place: 300,- €

Closing date:    15 February 2012

Out of the many things I did during my International Field Program (a.k.a. IFP), the one great thing I did was assist with a workshop hosted by LASANAA, held in Jyamirkot. Jyamirkot is outside of Lalitpur, one of the cities that makes up greater Kathmandu. LASANAA is an alternative art space based in Kathmandu, which seeks to bring artists of all types together. The workshop was held in mid-June 2010, with the goal of creating plans for a Live Art Hub, to be built in Jyamirkot.

For me, one of the biggest obstacles regarding the workshop was the language barrier. For the most part, the workshop was conducted in Nepali, of which I know about 20 words (possibly 30 words if I’m lucky). I was originally brought on to document the process, but after I revealed my background in design, I was asked to contribute as well. We started off the first day drawing our ideas, and then the second day we were all put to work constructing those ideas from whatever materials we could find.

Our first model attempt, nicknamed “The Leaning Tower of Guggenheim”

After the smaller, more individual models were created, we asked the participants to work in two different groups and combine ideas for a more final version of the model. The most interesting thing about this part was watching the different ways people in the groups collaborated. We ended up creating two models, one to be built in the Jyamirkot location and another one for a location in Kathmandu.

The workshop was a great experience, especially being able to create after a year of focusing on academia. It was also a way to communicate with artists that practice a different form that I do, as most of the artists present were painters (a few were sculptors). I am hoping that these models get built; when they do I plan on traveling back to Kathmandu to be present for their openings.
